Johannesburg – I don’t always visit my friends in South Africa, but when I do, it snows for the first time in 30 years

When I was planning my trip to Johannesburg, one of the things I thought was: “I don’t even want to sit in front of the computer”. Even though I brought my notebook, to transfer the photos from the camera. I did just so, and it was good, but it seems people are missing me (family and boyfriend are starting to complain that I have ‘disappeared’) and I decided to share a wee little bit of what I’ve done here so far.

So, the trip went well, South African Airlines are awesome, really nice crew, nice service. And they serve a fantaaaastic red whine too. The only small set back I had was at the airport, the national health agency was on a strike. I needed the internacional vacine card and they were of a mind of not giving me one. But it was not like they could deny me one.

When I arrived in Johannesburg, I found out that the weather had decided to take a turn for the worst too. I had been monitoring the weather for two weeks. It was always a bit cold in the morning, and alright along the day. A range of 8 to 20 ºC. The day I arrived, it decided it was a good day to snow for the first time in 30 years.  I just watched the snow falling for a little while and went to sleep. I can never get some sleep either on bus or airplane and I wanted to be fully rested for the safari on the weekend.

When I woke up, my friend and her fiancé took me to a restaurant called Moyo. AWESOME place. Fell in love with it right away. Great food, really nice atmosphere.

Quando eu estava planejando minha viagem para Johannesburgo, uma das coisas que eu queria evitar era entrar na internet. Eu queria curtir o meu passeio, passar tempo de qualidade com minha amiga. Mesmo tendo trazido meu notebook para passar as fotos da máquina para o computador, eu consegui ficar longe da internet. Mas algumas pessoas começaram a reclamar da minha ausência (família, namorado…) então resolvi compartilhar um pouquinho do que eu fiz aqui nos primeiros dias.

A viagem foi muito tranquila. A South African Airlines é fantástica. Ótimo serviço de bordo, tripulação gentil e prestativa e serviram uns vinhos sensacionais também! O único problema que eu tive foi no aeroporto. A Anvisa estava de greve e não estavam muito afim de fazer minha carteira internacional de vacinação. Não que eles pudessem me negar, mas ficaram inventando contra-tempos. Foi bem chato. 

Quando eu cheguei em Johannesburgo, eu descobri que o tempo decidiu mudar para pior. Eu havia monitorado o tempo todos os dias, por duas semanas e todos os dias estavam friozinhos de manhã e ficava uma temperatura agradável durante o dia. Sempre ali nos 8 ºC de manhã e 20 ºC durante o dia. Quando eu cheguei, o tempo decidiu que era um bom dia para never pela primeira vez em 30 anos. Fiquei assistindo a neve cair por um tempo e fui dormir. Eu nunca consigo dormir em ônibus ou avião e eu queria estar bem descansada para fazer o safari no fim de semana.

Quando eu acordei, minha amiga Tati e o noivo dela Juliano me levaram a um restaurante fantástico, chamado Moyo. É um restaurante com pratos típicos de várias regiões da África. Apaixonei pelo lugar. Ótima comida e atmosfera.

My order was a King Prawn with exotic spices. Juliano had a super spicy ostrich meat (which I quite liked), and Tatiana had a regular fillet. Tati, Y U NO fun with your choices? hehehe I’m just joking, her fiancé picked on her enough because of her choice.

O meu pedido foi camarões com uns temperos exóticos. O Juliano pediu avestruz com um tempero bem apimentado (que eu gostei bastante) e a Tati pediu um filé normal. Tati, sua sem graça! kkkk brincadeira, o noivo dela ficou pentelhando a Tati o suficiente por conta da sua escolha.

We also ordered Samosas, these are quite popular here and absolutely delicious! The cheese one specially.

At this restaurant, they paint the ladies’ face with a tribal flower theme, while men get a warrior theme.

Nesse restaurante eles pintam os rostos das moças com um tema tribal floral, enquanto o tema dos homens é de guerreiro.

My friend lives in a complex in Sandown, posh and suburban looking. She has been a most gracious hostess, even greeted me with a lovely souvenir when I arrived! 😉

Wednesday, before our roadtrip, I decided to go for a walk at a park nearby, called Mushroom Park. And then after the lovely stroll, I went to the Sandton City, a huge shopping mall where there’s also the Nelson Mandela Square. The park is quite small, but really lovely. One thing I keep on saying to Tatiana is that: “Wow! Londrina needs a place like this!”… my city is so far behind is so many aspects =/

Quarta-feira, antes da nossa viagem, eu decidi fazer um passeio tranquilo por um parque aqui perto, chamado Parque Cogumelo. E depois do parque, eu fui para o Sandton City, um shopping imenso onde também fica o Nelson Mandela Square. O parque é pequeno, mas muito fofo. Uma coisa que eu não paro de falar para a Tati é: “Tsc, Londrina precisa de um lugar assim!”… minha cidade é tão atrasada em tantos aspectos! =/

Too bad the snow had fallen only the day before. It would be lovely to see it falling here…

These birds they are everywhere around Johannesburg. They have a crow-like cry that got me jumpy the first time I heard hehehe

Esses pássaros estão em todo lugar em Johannesburgo. Eles têm um “canto” parecido com o dos corvos que me deixaram surpresa da primeira vez que eu os escutei hehehe

At the Mushroom Park there were some birds building their nests. It was such an adorable thing to watch. They’d build a bit, sing so sweetly and happily for a while then go back to building. So very cute 🙂

No Parque Cogumelo haviam alguns passarinhos construindo seus ninhos. Foi uma coisa tão adorável de se ver. Eles construíam um pouco, paravam para cantar tão felizes e depois voltavam a construir. Muito fofo 🙂

I walked my way from my friend’s house to the park and to the shopping mall. I didn’t have any problems at all, but I also didn’t see any white people walking either…

Eu andei da casa da minha amiga até o parque e até o shopping. Não tive problema nenhum, mas também não vi nenhuma pessoa branca andando nas ruas…

One thing that really impressed me while going around the mall was the quantity of jewelery stores. SO many! And such eye-candy! So many diamond jeweleries! I have already chosen my engagement ring, and I’ll just share it to make sure my boyfriend knows which one I want! hehehe And since it’s so much cheaper than in Brazil, I don’t see a reason why he wouldn’t comply. ^.^

Uma coisa que eu fiquei impressionada no shopping foi com a quatidade de lojas de jóias. Tantas!! E de encher os olhos! Tantas jóias de diamantes! Eu já escolhi meu anel de noivado, e vou colocar a foto aqui só para ter certeza que meu namorado vai saber qual que eu quero! hehehe E já que é tão mais barato que no Brasil, eu não vejo um motivo sequer para ele não concordar ^.^
