Le Trip to Rio de Janeiro, First Day – Part ll

I don’t even have words to express how fantastic this weekend in Rio de Janeiro was. Everything was just so good! I was really happy to spend time with friends that I like a lot, saw beautiful things, had great experiences, had fun, took some nice photos… it was a good trip.

My friend Liana lives at the foot of the Dona Marta Hill, where the Santa Marta slum is. I wanted to go up the hill to see that unique view of the Botafogo Bay with the Sugar Loaf sitting pretty in its bed. There are two places in which you can have this view. One is called “Big Rock” which is half way up the hill and the other is the Dona Marta Viewpoint. We went to the Big Rock only because the day was fading away and it would be a steepy trek of 50 minutes up the hill and another 50 to come down, so it really wouldn’t be wise to go up and risk a fall. Liana’s boyfriend, Pedro, was much more interested in having a beer at a local bar and though I kept saying how very much I wanted to go up the hill to see the view from there, I knew it would be the same view, just from a higher point, and the experience of drinking beer there with them was much more interesting.

The pub we went to is right by the “Michael Jackson’s Slab”, that’s where he recorded the video for “They don’t care about us” and then they put a creepy bronze statue in his honor there and a mosaic by the artist Romero Britto.

The tram that takes people up and down the hill was broken, so we had to go down the hill through the slum, which was pretty cool too. This little girl was dancing funk hahaha of course…

When we got home, I think my head didn’t even touch the pillow and I was sleeping like a rock already. I was so dead tired…

Thanks Anna for posting these amazing photos. Through your lens I got to travel to a place I have only thought about. I liked how it wasn’t just the beautiful spots but areas of those who don’t live a life of grandour

Lovely to see the bright colours of the favelas, but those steep slopes look scary places to live.
