Cusco – Day Three – Maras Salt Mines & Moray Terraces

Another amazing day, with amazing places to see in Peru… what a place! I surely must return to Peru one day! But before going to the beautiful salineras de Maras, I woke up early again and went for another walk around Cusco.

Outro dia maravilhoso, com lugares maravilhosos para ver em Peru… que lugar! Eu com certeza preciso voltar ao Peru um dia! Mas antes de ir às salineras de Maras, eu acordei cedo novamente e fui dar uma andada por Cusco.

And I though *I* was good at giving the stinky eye… hahahah

Most people ignore, some look at them with disgust. How many look at them in the eyes?

Maioria das pessoas ignora, algumas olham com nojo. Quantas pessoas olham para eles nos olhos?

On our way to the Salineras de Maras, we had stopped the car to take a few landscape photos when a few minutes later I notice a person (at first I thought it was a woman, because of the clothes) coming with his flock. I was delighted with the scenery and asked him in spanish if I could take a picture of him, but he didn’t speak a word of spanish!!! But in came David to the rescue and they spoke in Quechua so that I was allowed to take some pictures of him! ^.^ I have a lot to thank David for! He was an amazing guide, made my tour to the ruins a lot better! Thank you Thank you, David! You’re the bestest! ;D

No caminho para as Salineras de Maras nós paramos o carro para fazer algumas fotos de paisagem quando eu notei uma pessoa (a princípio eu achei que fosse uma mulher) vindo com seu rebanho. Eu fiquei louca querendo fazer umas fotos dele naquele cenário e pedi permissão em espanhol. Mas ele não falava uma palavra de espanhol!!!! Mas o meu guia David veio para me salvar e eles ficaram conversando em Quechua e me foi dada permissão para fazer algumas fotos dele! ^.^ Eu tenho muito o que agradecer ao David! Ele foi um guia sensacional, fez meus passeios muito melhores! Obrigada, obrigada mesmo, David! Você foi o melhor!

The shepherd was telling David to bring him some warm clothes next time we go there, because it’s cold and he doesn’t have many clothes.

O pastor estava dizendo ao David para trazer agasalhos para ele da próxima vez que formos lá, porque está frio e ele não tem muitas roupas.

When we arrived at the salineras I was a bit disappointed. It had been raining everyday for many days and because of that the salineras were a bit muddy and not bright beautiful white as it is in the dry season. But it was still cool and impressive.

Quando nós chegamos às salineras eu fiquei um pouco desapontada. Estava chovendo há dias todos os dias em Cusco e por causa disso as salineras estavam um pouco embarreadas e não brancas brilhantes como na estação seca. Mas ainda assim era lindo e impressionante.

Once upon a time there was a photographer who used her fingers to take photos. One day salt ate away her fingers. The End.

Era uma vez uma fotógrafa que usava seus dedos para fazer fotos. Um dia o sal comeu seus dedos. Fim.

These terraces are absolutely incredible. Not only for their beauty and size, but also for their ingeniosity. There is a sophisticated irrigation system and their depth and orientation with respect to wind and sun creates a temperature difference of as much as 15 °C between the top and bottom!! This large temperature difference was possibly used by the Inca to study the effects of different climatic conditions on crops. The guide was telling me for example, that the coca bushes don’t take altitude and cold weather too well. So they planted it on the bottom, where it’s warmer. Once it was acclimated, it was moved up. Same with other crops. No wonder batshit crazy people think they were taught by aliens… ’cause you know, how many times you look around some high altitude landscape and think: “Oh, I’m gonna dig up a big ass hole and it’s gonna be warm down there so that I can plant my crops…”

Os terraços de Moray são absolutamente incríveis. Não só pela beleza e tamanho, mas também pela engenhosidade. Tem um sistema de irrigação sofisticado e a profundidade e orientação em respeito ao vento e sol faz com que exista uma diferença de 15ºC entre o topo e o fundo!! Essa diferença de temperatura, especula-se, servia como base de estudos nas condições climáticas em plantações pelos Incas. O guia estava me contando por exemplo que os arbustos de coca não se dão muito bem com altitude e frio. Então eles plantavam no fundo, onde é mais quente. Quando a planta se aclimatizava, eles mudavam a planta para um degrau acima e assim sucessivamente. A mesma coisa com outros tipos de plantas. Não é à toa que gente “fora da casinha” acha que eles foram ensinados por aliens… porque tá ligado? Quantas vezes você está andando por paisagens nas montanhas e pensa: “Véi, vou fazer um buraco gigante aqui e vai ser quente lá embaixo e vai dar para eu plantar minhas plantinhas…” 

Yes, I went down there, and yes it’s much warmer! :O

Lunch and dinner anywhere near the Plaza de Armas is pretty much for turists. It’s very good food, but a bit more expensive too.

Almoço e jantar em qualquer lugar perto da Praça de Armas é bem pra turista. A comida é sensacional, mas um tanto mais cara também.
